Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved to read. She went to school, grew up, studied more, worked, traveled, married, and had a family who loved books as much as she did. They read every morning, every lunchtime, every bedtime. It was kids’ books all day, every day. But no books just for herself. She had no time and no idea which books were worth reading when life was crazily full and busy.
She did something brilliant, though. She created three wondrous little humans, otherwise known as her children. Her youngest of the three was perfectly imperfect, unable to see nor hear. Communicating with him was a beautiful journey through the sensation of touch. He loved all things soft and cozy, especially blankets & hugs, as well as the feeling of grass and the sunshine on his face.
When his time on earth came to a sad end, this girl, now in her thirties, desperately wanted to continue to share the importance of how it feels to communicate through touch. To remind people to look at something but also feel it with your hands and consider how it makes you feel. Is it safe? Exciting? Happy? Does it tell a story? Does it evoke a memory or remind you of a person you loved? Does it spark joy? This is when her love for fabrics and textures was born.
Of course, she still loved the idea of grown-up books and wanted to get back to reading novels! To inspire herself to read, she made it a mission to read a book a week on the premise she created a fabric-wrapped bookmark for each book.
Hence, the collection of books grew. As did her fabulously tactile, fun, unique, full of personality bookmark collection. The designs became abundant, accessorized with her signature looped tassels, others adorned with beads, some giant, some small, a few mini. Each one is different, seldom are any two exactly the same. They are designed for various genres and themes, colors, and topics. The bookmarks developed to accessorize cookbooks and magazines. Some even sit pretty as decor in coffee table books.
Years later, she confesses the bookmarks have created a problem too big for her to bear alone – She cannot read a book unless the bookmark is matched perfectly to her book!
So to share her book and bookmark pairing obsession, and to inspire everyone else to read, ASUMAbookmarks officially launched in 2021.
She believes her bookmarks create a gateway to people’s spirits, enticing wholesome, interesting conversations, and connectivity. It’s a fresh gift idea that could never disappoint.
Of course, her ultimate pleasure is seeing and learning how people connect with her bookmarks. It’s always joyful. Especially when they confess they must match the bookmark to its book before they can read. It pulls on all the right heartstrings!
Who would have thought this girl could combine her baby’s legacy of touch and her love for books as the ultimate foundation for her big-purpose small business?
